Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist (October 2, 1869 – January 30, 1948), led the victorious struggle for India’s independence from British control. After being born and raised in a Hindu household in coastal Gujarat, Gandhi studied law at the Inner Temple in London. At the age of 22, he was admitted to the bar in June 1891.
After spending two uncertain years in India, where he was unable to establish a lucrative legal practice, he traveled to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant in a legal dispute. At the age of 45, he returned to India and immediately began organizing peasants, farmers, and city laborers to protest discrimination and excessive land ownership.
