Friendship is an affectionate bond between individuals. Compared to an “association” or “acquaintance,” such as a classmate, neighbor, coworker, or colleague, it is a stronger type of interpersonal connection. Some cultures limit the idea of friendship to a small number of very close ties; in others, like the United States and Canada, a person may have many friends in addition to possibly a closer bond with one or two people who may be referred to as best friends or excellent friends. Among other slang words are “besties” and “Best Friends Forever” . Although there are many different types of friendship, some of which may vary from location to location, there are several traits that are shared by many of these ties.
